CARLOW Library resounded to the mystical sounds of the uilleann pipes last week.

As part of a celebration for International Uilleann Pipe Day, which fell last Saturday, a special recital was given in Carlow Library on Thursday evening.

Pipers from across the county gathered for an hour and a half to play music and listen to a talk given by local musician Pat Mitchell from Bagenalstown.

Pat, who is an expert in the uilleann pipes, gave an in-depth talk on the history, styles and sounds of the instrument, which originated in the Celtic isles.

One of the youngest pipers in attendance was Ciarán Byrne from Tinryland, who has been playing the instrument for number of years.

His 12-year-old brother Oisín is also keeping traditional music alive by playing the accordion.
